Another creative season has come to an end and the 10 winners of the 2021 Sardine Contest have been chosen. In a generous “school”, with more than 2600 sardines, the choice was difficult, but one thing is certain: imagination has no limits.
Among the 2656 proposals received, from 42 countries, 7 Portuguese sardines, 1 Brazilian, 1 Belarusian and 1 French were chosen. These 10 winners will each be awarded a prize worth €1,000, marking the contest’s 10th anniversary. The pandemic and vaccines, migrants, culture, the environment or Santo António, almost all served as inspiration for the creation of new sardines, whose originality did not facilitate the task of the jury composed by Filipe Melo, Luís Royal, Joana Astolfi, Carolina Deslandes and Jorge Silva.
Ten years of creativity later, the desire to reach the goal of 50,000 competitors was not only fulfilled, but surpassed, thus celebrating in the best way the round anniversary of this healthy competition.
This year, and for the first time, the winners will be made available to the public, from June 12th, at the Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar, Puppet Museum, Aljube Resistance and Freedom Museum, Fado Museum, Lisbon Museum – Palácio Pimenta, Santo António and Teatro Romano, Casa Fernando Pessoa, Museu Bordalo Pinheiro and LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões. The challenge is simple: gather the new collection of 10 sardines, “fishing” one by one in each of these 10 cultural spaces at EGEAC.
In addition to the sardines, there is another good reason to visit some of these spaces on what would normally be the high weekend of Santos Populares. On the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th of June, Lisbon residents are invited to visit the museums, galleries and monuments managed by EGEAC for free.
