Reguengos de Monsaraz inaugurates new contemporary art gallery

The new Center for Contemporary Art in Reguengos de Monsaraz opened this Monday with the exhibition of a dozen works from the Novo Banco collection, where artists Graça Morais, José Pedro Croft, Rui Sanches, Luís Noronha da Costa (1942) are represented. -2020), Lucio Muñoz (1929-1998) and Manuel Amado (1938-2019).

In a statement, quoted by Renascença, the municipality explains that “this exhibition of contemporary artists results from the partnership established between Novo Banco and the Ministry of Culture to make its artistic and cultural heritage available to the public”.

For its part, Novo Banco recalls that this partnership, which has continued for five years, is part of the project dedicated to culture that aims to show the public “its artistic and cultural heritage”, allowing, on the other hand, to create in Reguengos de Monsaraz, “the first pole of contemporary art.”

The exhibited works, carried out in the last third of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, “illustrate aspects of the various plastic formulations that characterize the national artistic production of the time”, explains Novo Banco.

Thus, visitors to the art gallery, located in the Rojão Palace where the municipal library is also located, will be able to find two paintings by Luís Noronha da Costa, “painter and filmmaker”, who died in 2020, who sought during his artistic career “to work the perception of the image, between figuration and abstraction, using materials and techniques that were hitherto uncommon since the 1970s, ”according to the municipality.

“Transgressão”, from 1987, is the acrylic on canvas by Graça Morais that can be seen in this exhibition. The “painter of the figurative develops her artistic work in a path of identification with her universe and, at the same time, of expression of universal values and feelings”, highlight the promoters.

Among the works on display, the promoters also highlight the oil on canvas “Janela Quadrada”, from 1989, by Manuel Amado, or a 2004 sculpture in silly wood plywood, by Rui Sanches.

The inaugural exhibition of the Contemporary Art Center of Reguengos de Monsaraz also features three paintings by José Pedro Croft, namely a gouache on paper from 1996 and two 2003 works on mixed media on paper entitled “Study”.

Visitors can also appreciate two works by Lucio Muñoz, “one of the pioneers of Spanish abstract art”. They are works in mixed technique on wood, namely “Cuadrado – Tabla 27-94”, from 1994, and “Cuadrado – Tabla 28-95”, from 1995.
